Before buying your first fencing kit, ask your club what the next stage of training requires. You need the correct equipment for the class, a proper fit and a clear answer about what you can borrow.
A starter bundle is only useful if its contents match your weapon and program. Check the list with your coach before ordering.
Separate a trial lesson from regular training
Before the first class, ask your club which equipment it supplies. Confirm what is included, whether a rental fee applies and when you need your own items.
For a trial, follow the club’s clothing and footwear instructions. Once you continue, ask for an itemized equipment list. Do not treat everyday sports clothing as a substitute for the protective equipment required during fencing.
Trial or introductory course: Confirm supplied equipment and the club’s instructions before purchasing a kit.
Regular lessons and practice: Have the coach check the required protective items, sizing and whether electric equipment is needed.
First competition: Check the current organizer’s equipment requirements, inspection process and spare equipment before entering.
Get the fit and specification checked
Ask the coach or an experienced equipment technician to help with mask fit, protective clothing and a suitable glove. Check the complete set together so that the items work with one another.
USA Fencing’s domestic equipment guidance covers regulation clothing, an underarm protector, mask and glove. It permits standard jackets and pants without an FIE label for domestic competition. That does not establish the requirements for an international event.
Do not buy protective equipment several sizes too large just to extend its useful life. Ask about an exchange policy before ordering, and keep the packaging until the fit has been checked.
Confirm the weapon-specific items
Use this table as a buying conversation with your coach. It is not a complete competition inspection list.
The domestic guidance specifies an 800 N glove requirement for sabre competition. It also distinguishes mask and conductive-equipment requirements by weapon. Have the coach confirm the current specifications for the event you are entering rather than relying on a bundle’s product name.
| כלי נשק | What needs particular attention |
|---|---|
| דקר | A suitable épée mask and compatible weapon and body cord for electric practice. |
| רומח | The conductive bib, lamé and compatible cords; applicable chest-protector requirements. |
| חרב | The conductive mask, lamé and compatible cords; the glove’s required certification. |
Buy in the order your program requires
First, identify anything you can no longer borrow. Next, arrange the protective equipment required for regular practice. Then add the appropriate electric weapon, cords and competition spares when your program calls for them.
Before buying a weapon, confirm handedness, blade size, grip and connector compatibility. Some youth categories have blade-size limits. Ask for the specification in writing so that a similar-looking item does not become an expensive mistake.
Keep your first-season purchases separate from optional upgrades. A larger bag, extra premium blades or specialized accessories can wait until you know why you need them. Budget for maintenance and replacements alongside the purchase price.
Check used equipment before paying
For a used mask, glove or garment, appearance alone is not enough to establish suitability. Ask a coach or qualified armorer to inspect it. USA Fencing’s regional equipment requirements prohibit damaged protective clothing and describe mask checks. Tape over a hole in a glove is not an acceptable repair under that guidance.
For electric equipment, ask for a functioning test and include any likely repair cost in your comparison. Check whether you can return the item if the club finds a problem.
Take this list to your coach
If you still need a training program, start with the club directory. Before a camp, read what to check before choosing a fencing camp and confirm the organizer’s equipment list. Use the לוח תחרויות to find the event whose rules you need to check.
